About Us

Who We Are:

We are a very small organization.

We choose our dogs
very, very selectively.

We DO NOT have a shelter.

We DO NOT accept
owner surrenders.

For the Love of Pits® is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit Cleveland-based organization run exclusively by volunteers.

We focus our rescue efforts on homeless pit bull dogs located in the Cleveland and Akron areas.

Our mission is to restore, preserve and protect the prestigious legacy of the American pit bull terrier and to improve the environment in which pit bull dogs and their owners live, by:

  • Rescuing dogs that are positive representations of the breeds, training them to be well behaved breed ambassadors and placing them in responsible, safe, loving and devoted forever homes;

  • Dispelling damaging myths perpetuated by false, incomplete and deceptive media reporting and educating the public regarding the true characteristics of the breeds;

  • Educating the public and dog owners regarding responsible ownership and safe behavior around dogs;

  • Providing low cost training classes to owners of pit bull dogs who are otherwise unable to afford training or who merely want to educate themselves and train their dogs in a nonjudgmental, friendly and supportive environment.

Why Pit Bull Dogs?

For the Love of Pits knows that it is so desperately difficult to be a pit bull dog in Ohio!  Pit bull dogs are the most abused dogs in our Country and, even if these sensitive dogs can escape the hands of cruelty, it often means that they are left in no hands at all since the majority of Ohio shelters, animal protective leagues, pounds and rescues turn their backs on these truly misunderstood dogs.  These so-called animal "welfare" organizations either turn away any dog resembling a "pit bull" or place the dog in a temporary cage to await its death.

There is a fearful stigma that has been placed on these dogs by society, perpetuated by the discriminatory policies of so-called animal "welfare" organizations and inaccurate and incomplete media reporting, and that, along with discriminatory laws, has made it difficult, if not illegal, for people to welcome these dogs into their families.  Countless numbers of pit bulls, who have already been abused, neglected and/or abandoned, regardless of dispositions, wait in shelters to be killed. There are so many beautiful dogs that, simply because they are labeled a “pit bull” are never given a chance to find loving homes.

For the Love of Pits is one of the only Ohio organizations dedicated exclusively to the rescue, temporary housing and placement of pit bull dogs.  We help pit bull dogs because it's the right thing to do and because they need us to speak out for and protect them.
