FALMOUTH, Mass A horrible find for a Falmouth pit bull owner.

Someone cut off the head of her pet pit bull and left it in a decorative tin on the hood of her car.

The owner found the head of her dog -- named Nitrous -- on Thursday.

Court papers indicate she blames the owners of a home-based Mashpee kennel.

The woman said the kennel had been caring for her dogs since she became homeless in October.

But the kennel's owners say they had nothing to do with it. They say they cared for the dogs as a favor, but returned them to the woman. Police searched the kennel on Thursday night and found no evidence of a crime.

The Falmouth woman was not available for comment to the Cape Cod Times. Friends indicated she may have left the area for her safety.

Falmouth and Mashpee authorities are investigating.
