Safe Interactions with Dogs -

For the Love of Pits visits kindergarten through high school classes with a dog to educate the children regarding how to safely interact with dogs, whether the dog is a part of their family or an unknown dog.  Children learn how to safely approach a dog, what to do if they see an off-leash dog, basic dog communication and actions dogs do not necessarily enjoy.

Length of program:  We are flexible.  The younger the children, the shorter we want to keep our presentation.  In many schools, we visit once a month or twice a semester.  Some teachers like us to visit once for a couple of hours.  It all depends on your needs and desires.

Humane Treatment and Education -

For the Love of Pits visits second grade through high school to discuss humane treatment of dogs, how to properly care for dogs and meet their needs, what it means to own a dog and the life-time commitment.  This program is generally delivered in 5, 30-minute discussions with students.  Students enjoy sharing stories and, therefore, we can spread out the visits to promote maximum participation.  The younger the children, the shorter the discussions to keep their interest.

Story-Time with Jake -

This program makes reading fun!  There are many ways to structure this program.  The two most popular structures are as follows:

(1)     Participating schools create small groups of children to sit in a circle and read to Jake, our reading partner (and his trainer).  The children take turns reading to Jake.  Often, the children sit on the floor with the dog.  If the children would like to physically interact with Jake, we have them sit side-by-side.  We encourage physical interactions since this helps put the children at ease - studies have shown that petting dogs lowers blood pressure and reduces stress.

(2)     Participating schools pair children that need help with their reading schools with Jake and his trainer.  The child reads to Jake for a set amount of time and is encouraged to physically interact with him.

Benefits of Story-Time with Jake

  • Petting dogs has been proven to lower blood pressure and reduce stress.

  • Children benefit from the patience, acceptance and comfort of the dog's presence, while getting much needed practice with their reading skills in a non-judgmental environment.

We are currently training additional dogs to participate in these programs.

Breed-Specific Legislation Presentations -

For many years, For the Love of Pits has visited local college and law school campuses to discuss Ohio's breed-specific legislation, recent case law and issues facing owners of targeted breeds.  The presentation includes a power point presentation, an explanation of breed-specific legislation, how the legislation is generally enforced, the effectiveness of legislation, how the legislations affects Ohio residents and their dogs, etc.

In the past, we have been asked to speak for 1.5- 2 hours; however, we are flexible and can structure our presentation to meet the needs of each specific educator.
