68 Pit Bulls Removed From Wichita Home

WICHITA, Kan. -- Two children have been removed from a home where 68 pit bulls were found, some bearing scars suggesting they were used for fighting, police said Tuesday.

The dogs were bred at the house for sale on the Internet and most were indoors when officers found them Monday, Wichita police Capt. Randy Landen said.

Police said the pit bulls were discovered when a state social worker went to check on the welfare of an 11-year-old boy and 5-year-old girl living there.

The youngsters' father insisted there were no children in the house and slammed the door, but officers who accompanied the social worker heard them and forced their way inside.

Police later obtained a search warrant and began removing the pit bulls. Both children were placed in protective custody, and the dogs were taken to a Wichita shelter.

The father was arrested on suspicion of resisting arrest, obstructing the legal process and child endangerment.

Landen said the children and their mother had been living at the house since March.
