Measuring for a Collar

Determining the correct collar size for your dog is very important to ensure your dog’s safety and comfort.

Proper fit:

  • The collar should not be loose enough to slip over your dog’s head.

  • The collar should not be so tight that it restricts your dog’s breathing or causes coughing.

You will need:

  • A cloth measuring tape.

  • If you do not have a cloth measuring tape, a piece of string or something similar, a marker and a measuring tape.

How to measure:

The dog’s neck in this picture measures 19 inches.

  • Place the cloth measuring tape or the string around the middle of your dog’s neck.

    • The best way to measure is to have your dog standing.  Avoid your dog turning his/her head during the measuring process.

    • Do not measure too close to the top of the neck, close to the ears where the neck tapers inward.

    • Do not measure too close to the bottom of the neck where the neck begins to widen.

    • Do not pull the measuring tape or string too tight or let it hang too loose.

    • When you measure, make sure your fingers are not underneath the measuring tape or string.

  • If your dog has a lot of hair, please make adjustments so that you do not order a collar that is way too big for your dog’s neck.
  • If your dog’s neck is one of the standard sizes, please choose the standard size on our order form.  If your dog’s neck is in between sizes, please indicate the size of your dog’s neck on the order form.  For instance, if your dog’s neck measures 15.5 inches, indicate so on the order form.
